With the high price of silver and gold, other metals are coming into the light.
You will be finding more of tungsten, titanium, stainless steel, brass, and plated base metals.

I watch the fads move through the years like crashing waves sweeping the beach.
Each year it explodes and then drifts back to the ocean, as we anticipate the next crash of the next trend.
Although many of my designs remain ageless. I love the pieces that you can wear year after year and always be fashionable.
Would you be happy to wear Ocean Sage’s Stainless steel?
Don’t get me wrong, I do love stainless steel. Boat anchors look gorgeous on a stainless chain for rode.
I also love titanium, it has to be the greatest metal of all. Corrosive resistant with a lustrous white metallic finish. How could you not love it? So light, so beautiful, fast lane baby!
The plated metals are great for the trendy fashions. Just as the trend is on its way out, the metal begins to peel and flake. Hopefully not in the piercing of your ear.

When you wear Ocean Sage Jewelry, you are wearing a style that uses high quality materials. It is a product that speaks for itself. It is not mass produce, but always offers you a unique solution for your jewelry accessories. So for now I will stay with Sterling Silver, Gold and 14k Gold filled.

Today is winter and it is cold outside. I look out my studio at a vast landscape of white reaching all the way to the horizon. To bring the passion back into my life, I create with pearls. The colors, the luster, and to add Swarovski Crystals is like adding stars to that horizon. I love to design with the summer passion of pearls.

A New Year

As I contemplate on Ocean Sage’s focusI try to figure what direction to go.
Sea Glass is a subject close to my soul, and fashion is close to my heart.
As my sister would say “why choose when you can have both.”

So first we’ll take a look at fashion.
Turquoise has all but faded from 2010,
and will be here for a very long time.

A new color comes into the spot light.
Pantone calls it “Courageous. Confident. Vital.” Welcome Honeysuckle.
I always thought of a flowering honeysuckle as a creamy white color. The color of the year is described by Pantone as a “festive reddish pink”.
As most of you know I am also a bee keeper. Did you know that the majority of the bees are girls?
I will get to the nursery this year and get them some nectar filled festive pink Honeysuckles.
My girls will be the buzz of the feral bees in the timber.
What are your thoughts of painting their
hives in the festive color?

Just a bit on Sea Glass
Sea Glass was the gem of choice over the Holidays.
With the new cliental comes new questions. Which is great. It motivates me
to learn more about the origin
of the many colors.

Why Buy Gold Filled Jewelry

Why Buy Gold Filled

With the price of gold, a piece of gold jewelry would be a
costly investment. Gold filled offers the same quality of
gold, but for an affordable price.
When looking at the alternatives, gold filled and gold plated
should not be confused.

Gold Filled vs. Gold Plated

Gold plated is the lower level of jewelry, where gold filled is
a very good alternative to solid gold. Gold filled is 100% more
gold than gold plating.
Gold filled is regulated by the government, where as gold plated is not.
The gold filled jewelry wears, looks and lasts like solid gold.
Gold plated jewelry will tarnish and rub off.
In the jewelry industry gold filled must be at Least 1/20th by weight of the
product to lawfully be called gold filled. (also referred to as GF)

What is Gold Jewelry

All gold starts with pure 24 karat gold.

24K is 99.9% gold.
Gold by itself is too soft
for jewelry, and other alloys are
added to it.
You rarely see 24K
jewelry as it would not
hold it’s shape very well.
Much of the
22K is found in antique jewelry, and is also
very soft for every
day wear.
18K is 75% gold is used for fine jewelry, and
has
adequate strength.
14k is 58.3% gold and it wears very well for everyday
jewelry, while still having the gold hue.

What is Gold Filled Jewelry:

Gold filled is a process of bonding solid gold to a base metal.
What this means is that you have a tube of 100% gold around a metal.
The least you can lawfully have to be gold filled is 10K.
Most gold filled jewelry is made with 14K gold. This means that
you are making your tube from a 14K sheet of gold.
So everything that touches you is Gold, and this layer must
legally be 1/20 the weight of the piece of the jewelry.
It will wear like gold, it will not tarnish, can be worn by
in most cases by people with sensitive skin, and you’re
able to enjoy real gold with out the price tag.

Caring for gold filled:

Gold filled can last for a lifetime if cared for properly.
As with any precious metal, keep away from harsh chemicals,
and clean with warm sudsy water, or use of a quality polish clothe.

I hope this helps you to understand the differences in the
quality of jewelry.
At Ocean Sage I Never use gold plated. My product, when
made with Gold, is 14K Gold Filled.

4th Annual Jewelry Party

2010 Michigan Summer Jewelry Party

I would like to thank all those that came to the 4th annual Michigan Jewelry Party.
It was a perfect night to remember.
Beautiful evening with a delightful breeze from Lake Michigan.

Ocean Sage at the Art Gallery

Snake Alley Art Fair

I was so excited that Ocean Sage was invited to host at the Art Guild
during the 2010 Snake Alley Art Fair.
The Art Guild is in a new location right in downtown Burlington on Jefferson.
There was a lot of work to the renovation to this old building.
The members involved in this
have done a sensational job.

During the Snake Alley Art Fair

Ocean Sage was set up inside the Art Gallery. It was a great time
meeting a lot of new people, and visiting with ones that I had already met.
I did demonstrations of how to do wire art, and look forward to doing it
next year.

With Summer here, I’m getting ready for a few road trips to Michigan.
Will post more on that this week.
With a full supply on Sea Glass it’s time for me to get back to the
Studio.

The Challenges of making Sea Glass Jewelry

I thought it would be fun to talk about
sea glass jewelry, and the challenges of
making jewelry with it.
I have had such a wonderful opportunity
to do some very unusual pieces.
The latest is a beautiful piece of very
rare yellow.
In the book Pure Sea Glass, Richard
Lamotte states that yellow is the 4th
rarest color of sea glass.
He goes on to explain that yellow
bottles were never massed produced.
So his odds are, out of every 3,000
pieces of sea glass you find your 3,001
will be yellow.
Your’s odds may be better in Vegas,
but never as much fun as walking along
the beach in search of the powerful sea’s
treasures. Then again, maybe it’s fun to
have a wild side.

This is a beautiful piece of yellow, if not
from a bottle possibly a beautiful yellow
vase, if only the glass could tell us it’s story.
It was a difficult piece to wrap. The front
was rounded and the back inverted. This
was not what made it difficult but the shape made it very
difficult to get a centered look.
After having it wrapped, I decided to
do 180 degree change and was happy.

Rare Sea Glass

As I spoke in my last post of the wonderful treasures from Maui,
I will go more into the rarity of the glass.
As much of our world has gone to plastic,
sea glass is becoming difficult to find.

I continue to look through the sea glass from Mikey’s past
and pick out pieces that have colors I rarely see.

For instance the Coca Cola Bottles are blue green, this piece
Looks as if it am be a ca or co and it is a rare lime green.

Although there have been browns
as you can see in this brown and Olive, they almost look black.

Although these colors are considered to be rare,
the sea glass that is recognized as being the most
rare is orange.

I am not 100% inclined to believe in this verdict.
Although orange may be the most sought after color, is it
Really the rarest?

As we know our sea glass comes from bottles, glasses,

cups, plates, windows, lamps, and articles long that nature.
Wouldn’t it be prudent to conclude that the rarest glass
comes from the oldest glass?

Something to think about and will be discussed in our next post.
